Obituary for Roy J. Stumpf

Roy J. Stumpf, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many, was reunited with his wife of 62 years, Hallie, and daughter, Deborah, on August 13, 2025, in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Roy was born on November 23, 1935, in Neenah, Wisconsin, to Henry and Margaret Stumpf.  The oldest of four children, Roy grew up in a close-knit family.  After graduating high school, he proudly served his country in the Korean War.  When his military service ended, Roy pursued his education earning his bachelor’s degree in mathematics at St. Norbert College and his master’s degree in mathematics at Bowdoin College in Maine –all while raising his first two children with Hallie.

Roy began his teaching career at Reedsville and Columbus High Schools, moving on to teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, inspiring countless students over the years.  When not in the classroom, he was often found with a “how to build” book in his hand or working on one of his many building projects. What started as a hobby turned into a life-long passion; first building a single-family house, then duplexes, and eventually building and developing Meadow View East Apartments with Hallie and his children-a business that is still managed by his family today.

In 1993, Roy, along with his business partners, David Withbroe and John Mathys, founded Dental City, a nationwide distributor of dental supply products to over 20,000 dental practices throughout the United States.  Roy was admired not just for his leadership but for his integrity, vision and generosity.

Roy was deeply committed to St. Louis Catholic Church in Dyckesville, WI. He was very active in his parish, sang in the choir, helped build a gathering space in the church and strengthened its community outreach.  Roy was instrumental in the success of the annual church picnic and car show.

Roy believed in giving back, serving on boards, mentoring others and supporting causes close to his heart including UWGB and St. Norbert College.

One of Roy’s favorite places was “Cayuga,” a small log cabin in Cayuga, WI, that was built by Hallie’s father for her mother, a place where family spent time enjoying each other and the outdoors. Roy promised Hallie that one day he would build her a log cabin, resulting in “The Log,” a full log home he and his son, Roy C, built in Dyckesville. With Hallie, Roy also built a winter home in Belize and was famously known on the island as “Mr Roy.”

Roy was a very active person with many hobbies.  He was a competitive racquetball player for most of his life, so much so that he built a court in his home.  Many great games of racquetball were played there with family and friends. Roy’s love of fishing and hunting led him on expeditions worldwide. The family remembers their home filled with music as Roy’s barbershop quartet rehearsed in their living room weekly. He enjoyed working on his many cars, and weekends would find him at a car show with a vehicle from his collection. In all his activities, Hallie was often by his side.

Roy was an active cyclist and runner. He could be seen riding his bike between Green Bay and Dyckesville or on the Fox River Trail, and he participated in many Bellin Runs, striving to finish in fewer minutes than his age.

Roy’s legacy is one of love, devotion to family, service, adventure and generosity.  He was always ready to build something new, give a helping hand or share a laugh with those he loved.

Roy is preceded in death by his wife, Hallie Stumpf; daughter, Deborah (Stumpf) Ernst; son-in-law, Mark Ernst; sister, Mae; mother, Margaret, and father, Henry.

He is survived by his children, Mary Jean (James) Hujet, Barbara (David) Withbroe, and Roy C. (Sarah) Stumpf; grandchildren, Shannon (Adam) VanPay, Jason (Kim) Hujet, Ashley (Craig) King, Richard Hujet, Kathryn Stumpf, Hans Ernst, Rachel Stumpf, Will Ernst, Ian Ernst, and Joseph Stumpf; great grandchildren, Brady, Kyla, Jack, Ellie, Clayton, and Tenley; sister, Margaret Yakel, brother, Robert (Jeanne) Stumpf, and many nieces and nephews.
